I was on my way surfing the other day when my board decided to fly off the back of the truck,
landing on the road and luck not to be run over.Leaving it with not a dent but a hole on the
and a chip on the nose. I looked into getting it professionally repaired but could not afford
the cost. I came across your repair kit on Ebay which turned out to be £3 with postage to the UK.
So thought its worth ago and I’ll do it myself. It arrived within 8 days of ordering so gave it
ago on my js combat 6'4''. Much to my surprise it was really easy to do and filled the rather
large hole brilliantly. Even had enough left over to sort out the chip on the nose. This
product is fantastic and am going to recommend it to my friends. I also do a lot of kayaking
here in the UK and would like to find out if it works with that as a temporary repair. I think
your products will do really well over here as I will definitely buy again. Thanks very much
Phix Doctor you’ve got me covered

There was a time when surfboards were made of wood and the surf spot line ups were empty. From those days forward surfboards builders went in search of lighter materials to improve the performance. The answers came in the form of polyester resin that originally hardened in the sun but later was modified to need a catalyst in order to control the process of hardening better. Today not too much has changed in the mainstream of surfing although new resins and core foams have entered the scene, many people agree there is no reasonably priced alternative which means it looks like good ol polyester resin will be around awhile longer. When it comes to fixing your surfboard the basic elements remain the same too. Strangely enough resins were originally Sun powered and in the past few years it’s made a comeback in the repair world. I prefer it for the simplicity factor and that it eliminates that nasty catalyst necessary to harden conventional resin.

Here’s what you need to fix your board:

Resin – Sun activated type when possible,100 grit Sandpaper, just enough to rough up the area and remove any loose particles fiberglass cloth to cover dings bigger than half inch or 1.25 centimeters. If the ding is deep some foam filler is good to keep the repair light.

Then Working in the shade:
Clean, dry and lightly rough up with sand paper the surrounding repair area. Apply a filler if needed and allow to harden before applying the final coat. If fiberglass cloth is needed apply a light pre coat of resin, then the fiberglass. Then thoroughly apply resin to saturate the cloth filling the ding to original volume.

Some things to consider
If you are using sun activated resin it’s best to work in the shade and then move the repair to the sun for hardening.

A helpful trick of the trade is included in many repair kits – clear plastic! When the final layer of resin is in place the plastic is layed over it firmly to smooth the resin during the hardening process! Smoothy sheets can save you from extra sanding since they often result in a perfect finish! I recently came across a repair kit that has all the goods needed to get results like I mentioned above. It’s called Phix Doctor, but what I liked most about it was that it uses earth friendly packaging resulting in 80% less CO2 emissions than conventional repair kits.
This means Surfboard repairs have gotten easier thanks to sun powered resin and earth friendlier too!

It is becoming harder to just go out and buy a new surfboard these days with smaller tighter budgets and higher prices so learning how to keep that magic board in top condition makes more sense than ever.

If you own a surfboard your eventually going to get a ding, there’s just no avoiding it and sadly enough most dings happen in the home so be advised a protective board bag is where your board belongs when it’s not in the water. Not only will it minimize ding potential, but it will protect your board from the yellowing effects of u.v. rays.

These days many boards have an outer resin coating or “glass job” made from epoxy and that means the core is likely to be made from a type of foam that is very water absorbent, great stuff when it’s dry and the outer layer of resin and fiberglass are intact, big trouble if it’s exposed to water for very long. What happens is the water gets in between the foam core and outer resin shell then expands and contracts with temperature and atmospheric pressure changes to create delamination (separation) of the outer shell from the foam which opens the door to several bad developments.

* Weight gain – Heavy Boards Lower Performance

* Weakening – Wet Spots are Potential Break / Buckle Spots

* Yellowing – Lowers Resale Appeal

These conditions add up to lower performance, higher risk of breaking and just a plainly ugly looking surfboard! keep this in mind as we cover the basics of a good repair job. For my repairs I use a non-toxic sun activated acrylic resin. I’m still careful not to get any on my hands and to work in very well ventilated area, outside if possible.

Work in the Shade!

* Prep is the first stage so make sure the ding is dry and all loose damaged material is removed.

* Then sand the area making sure to create a surface that’s clean so the new resin can get a grip for at least one inch or about 3 centimeters. Now it’s not essential, but if you have some masking tape you can tape around the outside of the repair area to maintain the work area separate from the undamaged area.

* Your ready to apply a thin layer of resin to the repair, but make sure your in the shade and position the ding so when resin is applied it won’t run or drip out of the targeted area.

* Apply enough resin to fill the ding and cover the sanded area then move the repair to direct sunlight.

* Ok, after 3 minutes more or less the resin is fully cured and ready go! Remove the tape if you like what you see, if not repeat the process to add a buildup until your satisfied. You can use your sandpaper to blend in any excess resin to the original form of the surfboard and you’re good to go!

Fixing a surfboard isn’t that hard, I mean there are some dings I’d rather leave to a pro, but most of the time dings are small and easily fixable. For some reason people find excuses for why they can’t do it so surfboard repair skills are always in demand, plus it beats the inconvenience of giving up your surfboard for sometimes a week or more and then paying at least twenty five dollars or more for someone to do what you can do in just a few minutes and a couple bucks!

Let’s face it, part of why you repair a surfboard is to maintain it’s looks. We like to think that a repair done well is the end of a small tragedy, but sadly enough it’s really just the beginning of another. Have you ever looked at a surfboard and instantly seen every spot that’s ever been repaired? It doesn’t matter how well the job was done when the resin does a chameleons trick becoming yellow as a Post It note screaming “Ding Ding, Ding” , highlighting every spot you took time and effort to carefully remove the damaged material and perform the plastic surgery you thought at the time went so well. What people aren’t aware of is that most repair kits on the market don’t include U.V stabilizers in their resin. These companies are never going to say it, but then again why would they. You buy the kit, do the work and this is what you get….

· Unprofessional appearance
· Lower Resale Value
· Weakened repair over time

While the reason for this is probably tied to cost or company profit, adding a stabilizer is expensive and they have gotten away with it – it’s just the way things have been …until now. Imagine a resin as clear as water and a year later it’s still that way. That’s what PhixDoctor brings to your ding! Finally an answer to the yellow spots that have plagued the elusive perfect repair.

Look a little closer and you’ll see this is just one of the innovations PhixDoctor repair kit has to offer. You also get a unique flexible package designed to hold enough resin to complete about 5 average dings. Any surfer that has spent money on a full sized repair kit or one of those metal tubes can tell you that most of the resin gets hard before they can use it so PhixDoctor.net has brought together the best resin available in a flex package so unique it received a U.S. Patent! . Don’t buy a big clunky repair kit that will probably end up hardening before you can use all of it.

Check out these perfectly sized repair kits at www.phixdoctor.net and your board will thank you and so will your wallet. The repair kits come with sand paper, smoothy sheet, full instructions for only $2.49 each and that includes shipping right to your door. Remember, a good ding repair shouldn’t come back to haunt you!

As I continue to travel and surf the world I am welcomed everywhere I go by surfers and others. People who share their time and and are thankful for my time with them. I often go to the Netherlands. I find myself on the Noord Zee. (North Sea) A small sea with hardly enough room to generate serious “swell” with interval enough to call it swell. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve seen mast high waves there with windsurfers and kiters flying over the texture. Another likely situation is waist high, onshore, close interval, d-minus quality surf. Still I enjoy my go out and feel cleansed inhaling seawater. Thanks to Julian the Ding Doctor who does ding repair in a container at FAST. A place where one can find all the basics. Food, board, accom, storage, etc. Since I also do board repair I am attracted to artists, recyclers, and others with similar energy for resourceful creativity. Or as Julian puts it, “magic”. Often when I am abroad I long for a shaping room or workshop and tools to shape a new one or Frankenstein an old old one. Recently I had the opportunity to shape a board for a friend in Scheveningen. She let me put big old Aipa style stinger wings in her swallow tail. So we basically outlined what I used to draw in my school notebooks in Hawaii back in the 70′s. (and ride) However I marked it for 4 fins. One fin or 4 its all what it should be. Good, clean, fun.
